FALLEN

If you liked the collaboration between Enimatik and Dark Wild Angel, with Desires and Desires Keridark Remix as our first songs, I have good news. This cool collaboration seems to have only just begun...

It is something extraordinary what technology allows us today. Being able to communicate easily with people from all around the world, share files, projects, and most importantly, feelings, I think it is one of the best gifts of the current times.

My dear friend Nana, after our first two collaborations, was kind and enthusiastic about my proposal to continue collaborating with Enimatik. Always grateful, always kind, despite the harsh circumstances experienced in many places in the world, at any time.

Our original idea was to make a song that talk about her artistic character, Dark Wild Angel, a fallen angel who devours human souls of prey hypnotized by his supernatural beauty, and then returns to the dark dimension of Undergoth. Sounds cool right?😎

The idea

Fallen is a song which I think is very danceable but also very intimate, very sentimental. I have tried to combine styles like darksynth and darktechno with darkpop or EDM. What without a doubt in my opinion makes the difference is Nana's voice, simply passionate. A sweet voice but with character, very special. When, a few days after I sent her the Fallen demo, she returned her vocal tracks to me, she told me that she would like me to use all of them for the song, since she had made variations and improvisations of her own. When I import her tracks into my DAW project, you can imagine. OMG, they were amazing...😉

I had to adapt some of my vocal tracks to suit hers, but the idea from the beginning was for Nana to be the absolute vocal protagonist of Fallen. I think our two voices fit perfectly, we have very complementary vocal registers, and my vocal tracks really play a supporting role, adding a different background to the main female solo voice. As with our previous collaborations, the recording quality of Nana's tracks was very good, congrats to the sound engineer...

Mixing and thoughts

As you can imagine, the mixing process for Fallen has been quite complex. On one hand it had a powerful rhythmic electronic base, a powerful bass, several pads and arpeggios, and on the other hand almost fifteen vocal tracks. My biggest task has obviously been to make space for all the sounds, soI worked with EQ and compression plugins, along with stereo expanders.

I would like to make a point here to emphasize the incredible evolution of computing applied to music production in recent decades. As those of you who know me a little know, I started producing music in the early 90s. A fantastic time for artistic and musical creation, but in which the available technology was very limited. Exorbitant prices for ridiculous features today, that was the situation for many of us who were starting to compose and produce music. Only large recording studios had quality equipment, but which, compared to the current performance of any DAW, was also limited in performance.

Decades ago, there were two key points to producing professional quality songs. The money available to invest in equipment and rental of a recording studio, and the technical knowledge. Today, the first point has been blurred, and knowledge and creativity are, in general, our limitations. By this I do not mean that the quality level of professional studies (the best, not just anyone) can be achieved from a humble home studio. I simply want to say that the threshold for producing music of very worthy quality, perfectly valid for distribution as an indie artist, has evaporated.

With knowledge, a current CPU, good input interfaces, good listening monitors, good microphones and cutting-edge software, no talent can be wasted simply because they do not have the financial means to produce a quality demo. My advice to all indie artists who may read this post is to invest in technical knowledge of production and music theory, it is what will make the difference given that the equipment is already very accessible to everyone. The recording pro recording studio fee must be paid by the record label, which is one part of his job when betting on an artist. To point out, I'm talking about electronic music like what Enimatik makes.

Coming back to Fallen, after the hard mixing work that I mentioned previously, I think that the song that I started to master afterwards has a very good sound. One of the great challenges when mixing songs with voices is to manage to blend the latter with the rest of the instruments, given that at many frequencies they will collide with various sounds. Hence the importance of having a balanced mix of the musical base before starting to add the voices, the space available, let's say, must already have a huge prior work.

I would like to highlight once again Nana's talent as a vocalist, despite Enimatik being her first musical experience. I think she has an innate talent, Nana is capable of intoning naturally and making super interesting modulations of her own creation. Her voice has a very sweet and sensual timbre but at the same time is expressive and loaded with feeling. I had to modify some of my vocal tracks to adapt them to Nana's, but I think it was worth it. You can check it by listening to the song, which I'm sure you'll love...

Inspiring images

I'm seriously fascinated by the way Nana's photos and those of previous Enimatik vocalists inspire me when it comes to songwriting. Sometimes the image inspires the song from the beginning, other times the song develops once it has started after integrating the image into the global idea. As those of you who follow me on social platforms know well, Enimatik is developing a great story, which is made up of many others, in which there are amazing characters. You could say that, as a lover of literature as well, I am starting to create a kind of graphic novel with my own soundtrack. Sounds interesting right?😏

Maybe it's my sensitivity as an artist, but the fact is that when I first saw Nana on Instagram, I was captivated by those photos which showed not only a beautiful girl, but something more. A girl who liked really hard music (trash, metal...) but who, at the same time, had an adorable tenderness and sensitivity. Her artistic pseudonym and fictional character, Dark Wild Angel, is the embodiment of all of the above, In a way that is so magical to me that I cannot describe it with words, but with songs...
