October 2021 was a turning point for Enimatik. It was the moment "Photosex" was bor, a track that quickly became a fan favorite and a deeply personal milestone for us. Fast forward four years, and that same spark of inspiration hit us again. We felt it was time to breathe new life into it. Have you experienced the new era yet?
Shortly before finishing the mix of our last song together, "A moment in time", I had the idea of rescuing "Photosex" from Enimatik's discography. More than four years had passed since its release, and during that time the Enimatik project has been maturing, and my studio has been updated with new tools. So I thought, why not make a new version of a song so dear to all of us?
I spoke to Jane and Renat, and they loved the idea. There’s a certain magic in how the music, the lyrics, and the visuals of the original version connected us all, it was a true communion.
Rescuing a 2021 project in a new DAW, with new software and hardware, is always a challenge. And if it is a complex project, with multiple tracks, both audio and MIDI, the challenge is even greater. I have rigorous backups of the entire Enimatik discography, but my biggest fear was that when importing the project to the new DAW, the file would be incompatible or damaged, things that can happen. But hey, why wait I thought, without delay I opened my brand new DAW, looked for the original Photosex project and imported it. A few seconds passed that seemed like minutes while the software did its job and suddenly... Photosex had been reborn, everything was in order.
There were Jane's vocal tracks, mine, the structure, all the MIDI tracks, perfect. Obviously many sounds were no longer there because over the years I have renewed my arsenal of virtual instruments, but curiously the most characteristic of the first version had been maintained. I started well.
I really liked the original structure of Photosex, it was already iconic, so I didn't change it. The first thing I did was eliminate all the previous mixing (equalizations, dynamics processes, effects, panning...) and leave it virgin. Next, I set about finding the right sounds to replace the originals that were no longer there, or that I simply thought should be replaced for the new version. It took me a long time to do it, but when I had the main instruments defined, I started with the song itself.
I completely changed the rhythm part, with new sounds, new loops and new arrangements, with meticulous programming. Next I looked for a couple of new sounds to accompany those that had been kept from the original version, and began programming new arrangements, trying to evolve the style and character of the song. It was one of the stages that took me the most time, but it was definitely what allowed the new version to have such a powerful and worked sound.
Once the musical base was more or less defined, he put me to work on the vocal tracks. I quickly realized that the new processing tools I have in my studio today were going to do a great job with the original voices. I also decided to add a new track of my own vocals, which I recorded quickly and I think gives a lot of presence to the vocal tracks as a whole. As for Jane's vocals, they were completely reprocessed, and I think they turned out great.
After all the above, I started mixing the complete song. A complex mix given the number of existing tracks, and the processors, automations and effects involved. Without a doubt a challenge for me, since I wanted to give the best of myself to the song, and for it to be as good as possible, taking advantage of the increase in the technical capabilities of my studio.
I think the final result has been very good, I have taken advantage of the essential character of the first version, giving it a more current and powerful sound. The voices are also greatly improved, the years of progress in my studio equipment are noticeable in my opinion. A version that honors the spirit of 2021 but hits with the power of 2026. It’s louder, deeper, and more immersive.
Regarding the photographs for the cover of the promo campaign, Renat suggested that I make a new set, since I had new ideas in mind. As you can see, the photos are terribly captivating and beautiful. A sensual, voluptuous, enigmatic Jane, a true Princess of Darkness, the photography perfectly captures the "Photosex" energy. I think the set of photographs is magnificent, and I once again have the feeling that Renat reads my mind...
If you enjoy the song, don’t forget to support Jane and Renat. Their talent deserves it.
