NOKTHERION

Enimatik is back with a new single again, after a summer of rest, meditation and, of course, listening to a lot of music. The process has been unusually long, but I think the song has definitely been worth it.

After releasing “When You Meet Someone” last April, I felt the need to return to the darker and more alternative side of Enimatik. I can’t really explain why, I guess it’s simply the total creative freedom I have, which lets me move between styles and feelings without worrying about anything else. For those of you who’ve been following the Enimatik project from the beginning, you already know that this freedom is the most gratifying thing for me as a musician.

Quite influenced by the artists I’ve been adding to my playlists, I decided to create a darkwave/techno track, with vocals recorded by me, and with a strong dark electronic character. I wanted the song to sound acoustically impressive, so I spent a lot of hours in my home studio choosing the right sounds to include. I recently installed several new virtual instruments on my computer, from different developers and with different approaches to synthesis and sound generation, but all of them very intuitive, which allowed me to easily twist the original presets into something new. In Noktherion I’ve incorporated heavy bass sounds, with super powerful and synthetic low frequencies, and also some simple but beautiful arpeggiated sounds, to which I added a bit of saturation, giving them a lot of character and presence.

While searching and experimenting, I found a pad preset that was simply evocative and magical, with a wide reverb tail and an intoxicating resonance, and I ended up using it in several parts of the track. I also came across a spectacular kick drum sound, which only needed a low-pass filter and a few small tweaks to the low end to become devastatingly powerful in the mix. Without a doubt, Noktherion is one of the songs where I’ve invested the most time in sound selection, but in my opinion, the final palette has a super cool level of quality.

For the vocal tracks, in the verses I used new modulation and distortion plugins that I recently added to my DAW, and I think the result is very cool. I’m honestly fascinated by how much technology has evolved when it comes to music production plugins. Today you can do things that would have been impossible a few decades ago, and all at a very affordable cost.

In the choruses there’s a main vocal line and a couple of backing tracks, treated in a more classic way with a deep reverb that makes them blend perfectly with the rest of the mix. I made sure that the vocal melody didn’t interfere with a wonderful synthetic lead sound, which I wanted to be the main focus in that part of the song.

On the visual side, for the Noktherion promo campaign I used my own images along with photos by my dear friend Tanya, and I’ll never get tired of recommending that you visit her Instagram profile to admire her photographic art.

I managed to combine her photos with mine in a futuristic, tech-inspired context, and I think the contrast turned out really interesting. The idea I had in my head matched almost perfectly with the final result, an urban vision of the future, not dystopian, but mysterious and enigmatic.

Tanya kindly shared portraits of herself as well as urban landscapes for this new collaboration. Her portraits perfectly capture her enigmatic beauty and her intoxicating gothic and alternative style, black and white, beautiful and dark.

As for the cityscapes, once again I’m fascinated by her use of contrast, the result is amazing in my opinion. I’m not a professional photographer, just an amateur, but I can tell when there’s a lot of effort behind a picture, along with the right experience and mastery of the technical aspects. I truly believe photography is another form of art, something capable of transporting us, recreating emotions, and sparking experiences deep within us.

I invite you all to discover Noktherion, I think it´s a song which represents an huge evolution in terms of mix and sounds since my first songs and symbolizes very well the dark side of Enimatik, both musically and visually. In the end, art is art...
