It is exciting to realize that songs can be like living beings. They are born, they grow, and they can even be reincarnated into new pieces. They return to the composer’s life time and again as recurring inspiration, as if they never want to stop evolving. Do you want to know the story behind one of these songs?
The origin
The original version of Avalum was created back in 2006 during a musical project that never quite took flight. The song was never published or heard; it was simply tucked away in a drawer, or rather, inside a DAW project file that managed to survive for years without getting corrupted. It stayed there until 2020, when I started Enimatik. This second version of Avalum was released in December 2020.
That track was my second single, and I hold it very close to my heart. Produced with much more limited equipment than I have now, it belonged to the early stages of Enimatik, a purely instrumental chillstep and downtempo vibe. Fans described it as beautiful and emotional, with a special something. But deep down, I felt like something was missing.
Tanya
Those of you who visit this site or follow Enimatik on social media already know my dear Tanya. She is an incredible woman from Eastern Europe, a dark photography and landscape artist with immense talent. She is charming, kind, and elegant, and Enimatik has had the pleasure of collaborating with her on several occasions.
Tanya became the inspiration for the latest reincarnation of Avalum, the artwork and the promo campaing. One random night not long ago, while scrolling through her Instagram stories, the idea for a new version struck me. Seeing her photographs sparked something magical and unexpected, but from that first moment, it was driven by pure excitement. I felt in my soul that Avalum was simply missing a diva, a muse, an inspiration. And that was Tanya.
Midnight Avalum
It is always a thrill to open an old project in a DAW after several years. Incompatibilities, glitches, corrupted files... these are the ghosts that haunt you the moment you hit load in a modern version of the software. Fortunately, everything went smoothly. I found myself facing a blank canvas, or more accurately, a project resurrected after six years, like a being returning from another dimension. The process was fluid and natural, almost as if I had lived it before.
Midnight Avalum is practically a new song. I have changed every sound, many of the melodies, and the original structure. It was amazing to see how the upgrades in my studio and sequencer allowed me to capture a better sound and more charm than the previous two versions. I truly enjoyed reviving this instrumental track, which needs no vocals to convey deep emotions and feelings, allowing listeners to connect with their inner selves, if only for a few moments.
The song is beautiful, just like Tanya, to whom I will always be grateful for her kindness, talent, and willingness to collaborate with Enimatik. I believe Avalum is finally complete; it has reached its full maturity with Midnight Avalum. The song just needed to find its muse, its diva, and its inspiration.
